Agate : Most agates occur as nodules in volcanic rocks or ancient lavas, in former cavities produced by volatiles in the original molten mass, which were then filled, wholly or partially, by siliceous matter deposited in regular layers upon the walls. Agate has also been known to fill veins or cracks in volcanic or altered rock underlain by granitic intrusive masses. Such agates, when cut transversely, exhibit a succession of parallel lines, often of extreme tenuity, giving a banded appearance to the section. Such stones are known as banded agate, riband agate and striped agate.

  • Crystals come in different shapes and sizes, and some are small enough to be considered a choking hazard and therefore unsuitable for children under 3.

Children should always be supervised by an adult when playing with or handling crystals, as they are not your traditional “toy” and do require extra caution.  For example, some may be toxic, whether touched, ingested, inhaling dust particles or when mixed with water.  Others can be sharp in raw form, or when shattered or broken - some can be razor sharp.

When buying for children, ensure you have carried out your own research and that you understand which crystals are the most suitable.

A list of resources can be found below that will help you to decide.  A good start is to look for 'health risks' sections and 'hardness' which are extremely useful.
